titleOfInvention | IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF DIMETHYL TEREPHTHALATE |
abstract | A process for increasing the production of dimethyl terephthalate in the oxidation of para-xylene, methyl para-toluate or para-tolualdehyde or a mixture thereof in liquid phase, with molecular oxygen in the presence of 'a heavy metal catalyst, followed by esterification with methanol of the product resulting from the oxidation and distillation of the esterification product to separate the dimethyl terephthalate and the lower boiling compounds therefrom, leaving a distillation residue. The present process is characterized in that the residue from the distillation is contacted with methanol and molecular oxygen under an oxygen partial pressure of at least 0.2 bar and at a temperature of 140 to 350 degrees. C, in the presence of a manganese compound in a proportion of at least 10 ppm of manganese metal, relative to the distillation residue, in order to increase the formation of dimethyl terephthalate and of intermediate products which can be converted into terephthalate of dimethyl. |
