abstract Water-solubility of olefin sulphonates is improved by acetylating alpha-olefin sulphonation prods. with AcOH and Ac2O. Acetylation prods. are used as detergents in cleansing compsns., e.f. foam baths, shampoos, fine wash compsns. liquid-, all purpose-, hand-, car- and floor cleaning compsns. Acetylation (i) increases clear solubility in water, e.g. from 5- to >40% in case of 14/16 C olefin sulphonates, and (ii) increases foaming, expressed as foaming level, e.g., from 30- to 50 mm. for a 0.002% soln., in water at 43 degrees C and 20 degrees German hardness.
