| abstract | Rubber reinforced polymer mixtures of the high impactpolyestyrene (HIPS) or ABS type are made by polymerising (a) 13-97 wt. % of >=1 monoalkenyl nitrile monomer, (c) 2-36 wt. % of a diene rubber and (d) 0.2-20 wt. % of a liq. polymer from a conjugated diene. Monomer (a) is e.g. styrene, an aralkyl styrene, an alpha-alkyl styrene or an alpha- halostyrene; (b) is pref. acrylonitrile and (c) is e.g. polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene copolymer, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, polypentene, etc., in which the polytadiene has a cis isomer content of 30-98% and a Tv interval of -50 to -105 degrees C; the butadiene copolymers have a Tv interval of -20 to -70 degrees C. Prods. are high impact HIPS or ABS type materials with improved elongation at break and high tensile strength, improved hardness and resistance to thermal distortion compared with HIPS and ABS polymers contg. mineral oil or waxes to increase the elongation. |
