titleOfInvention NEW DERIVATIVES 3-HYDROXY 17-HYDROXYMETHYL GONA 1, 3, 5 (10) TRIENES, THEIR PREPARATION PROCESS AND THEIR APPLICATION AS A MEDICINAL PRODUCT
abstract Steroids of formula (I) are new: (R = 1-3C alkyl. X1 and X2 = H or 1-12C acyl. CH2OX2 may be in the 17alpha or 17beta position). They are prepd. from corresp. 3-protected-17-methylene cpd. by hydroboration/oxidation, isomer sepn. and deprotection via a novel. (B) intermediate, 3-methoxy-17 alpha - hydroxymethyl-oestra -1,3,5(10)-triene. (I) having anti-oestrogen and hypophysis-inhibiting activities without oestrogenic side-effects. They are thus useful in treating hyperoestrogenia, adenoma of te prostate and, as an adjuvant, cancer of the prostate, without risk of gynaecomastia or loss of libido. The usual oral dose is 10-200 mg/day. 3-Hydroxy-17beta-hydroxymethyl-oestra-1,3,5(10)-triene and its 17alpha-isomer are specifically claimed.
