abstract In the detn. of total bilirubin by coupling the bilirubin with diazotised sulphanilic acid in the presence of an accelerator there is used a mixt of accelerator (esp. caffeine) and sulphanilic acid activated by the addn of one drop of nitrite soln. Accelerator/sulphanilic acid mixts are stable and can thus be provided in pre-measured amts, so that the actual bilirubin detn involves only the addn of 1 drop of nitrite soln (variations in the size of the drop having negligible effect on the detn) adn the pipetting of the serum to be tested. This simplification to a single pipetting gives a saving in the time and a considerable increase in the accuracy of the detn.
