Prepn. of medicaments and foodstuff additions, for oral or rectal admin., of active constituents usually inactivated by these routes, by incorporating them in microorganisms, pref. dried before use. Pref. microorganisms is Lactobacillus bifidus. Peptide material, esp. hormones and enzymes may be protected from destruction by proteolysis in the gastrointestinal tract and administered orally or rectally instead of parenterally. Typically, insulin is mixed with dried Lactobacillus bifidus to give a prepn. active orally or rectally. 1600 mu of insulin orally is equivalent to 400 mu i.m. |
