titleOfInvention DERIVATIVES OF SPIROPYRANS, THEIR PROCESS OF PREPARATION AND THEIR APPLICATION FOR THE RECORDING OF INFORMATION BY OPTICAL
abstract Novel spiropyrans are of formula (I) and/or (II) these being opt. in equilibrium. In the formulae X is O or S; R1 is 1-18C alkyl; an aryl substd. by >=1 electron-attracting or -repelling gp. and/or comprising >=1 opt. unsatd. adjacent rings pref. contg. 1-4C; an arylalkyl with 1-5C alkyl; an alicyclic gp. contg. 4-10 CH2 gps.; a functional electron ron-repelling gp. chosen from 1-16C opt. branched alkoxy gp. aryloxy, mercaptoalkyl and arylalkoxy in which the alkyl or alkoxy gp. contain 1-16C, and mercaptoaryl; R2 is an electron-attracting gp. when R3 is electron-repelling and vice versa; R4 is 1-18C alkyl, arylalkyl contg. 1-5C alkyl, 1-10C alkenyl R5-8 are one of the above mentioned gps. or H, or taken by pair, form a 5-18C homocycle or a carbonyl gp. A specific cpd. (I) has R1=OCH3. R2=NO2, R3=H, R4=-CH(CH3)2, R5-7=H and R8=CH3. (I) are useful for the optical recording of information on transparent or opaque supports, for non-conventional photography, prodn. of thermally erasable stable latent images.
