titleOfInvention | PLANT EXTRACTION PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF STEROIDIC SAPOGENINS AND INDUSTRIALLY USABLE BY-PRODUCTS |
abstract | Steroid sapogenins and industrially useful by-products are recovered from vegetable material containing saponins by a simultaneous extraction and hydrolysis, using a mixture of H2SO4 and a lower alkanol. Vapour from the alcohol extracts the saponin and the extract is hydrolysed by the acid, the acid not being permitted to come into contact with the vegetable material. The spogenins are recovered from the extract together with an insoluble residue. Sapogenins are starting materials for steroids, e.g. cortisones, sex hormones and contraceptives. The by-products from this process are proteins, suitable for animal feeds, and unsaturated oils, suitable for the manufacture of soaps, perfumes, paints, varnishes and foodstuffs. Better recovery of sapogenins is obtd. with less formation of spirosta-3,5-dienes. The extraction is usually carried out in a Soxhlet extractor, using a mixture of 0.5-3.0 N. H2SO4 and 30-95% lower a alcohol. In an example seeds of Papilionaceae were crushed and extracted in a Soxhlet with 150 ml 1.4N H2SO4 in 95% ethanol. The recovery of sapogenins was 0.8% on weight of seed, compared to 0.4% for conventional extn. |
