abstract Thebaine is produced in high yield by (a) reacting either or both the epimeric salutaridinols with a 2-4C aliphatic acid anhydride or with SOCl2, SOBr2, POCl3, POBr3, PBr3, PCl3, PCl5, PBr5, COCl2, CH3SO2Cl and SO2, CH3SO2Br, ClCO2CH3, ClCO2CH2Ph or p-dinitrophenylchlorocarbonate opt. in the presence of an additional tert. amine and (b) treating the prod. obtd. with an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate. Pref. the reaction is effected at -10 to +25 degrees C. The epimeric mixt. is partic. obtd. by NaBH4 redn. of salutaridine.
