abstract Process for extn. of sterolic, and terpenic cpds. from plants comprises treating the finely-ground, powdered plant material with an anhydrous, low molecular weight, organic acid. Examples cover the extraction of Prunus Africana, Prunus Arobrea Montana and Khaya senegalensis bark. Pref. a mixture of the acid with its anhyndride is used. The process avoids the use of inflammable or toxic of e.g. benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons) organic solvents and gives a more selective extractions thus avoiding costly purification and loss in yields. Use of organic solvents often allows considerable hydrolysis of sapogenins and sterolic or triterpenic saponosides which the presence process avoids.
