abstract Concrete or mortar contg. a hydraulic binder, filler and a radiation-absorbing additive is improved in that the radiation absorbing elements are used in the form of their silicates and/or borates (granulated). Structures protecting against harmful radiation, esp. gamma-rays and neutrans having high penetration power, are produced at a relatively low cost. Waste materials can be used as radiation-absorbing additives. The pref. binder is Portland cement. The pref. filler is sand, and/or gravel and/or crushed stones. The pref. radiation-absorbing elements can be heavy, e.g. Pb, or Ba, or light, e.g. Li, Be or B. The radiation-absorbing additive is pref. granulated waste glass from the prodn. of television tubes.
