abstract | Preformed cathode for an electrochemical cell, consists of a semi-rigid component with a prescribed shape, and compsn. by wt. 40-99% soot, 1% min. of a mechanical binder which is inert in the cell, and the remainder graphite. The binder is pref. a fluorocarbon polymer, esp. PTFE or Kel-F(RTM), used in the amt. of 1-10%, with 65-9% soot and 0-30% graphite. The soot is pref. made into a suspension in a suitable liq. followed by adding the binder and moulding a suitable shape which is hardened. The cell pref. employs an alkali metal anode and a soluble depolariser, eso. a Li anode where the depolariser is POCl3, SOCl2 or SO2Cl2. The cathode contains a large amt. of active carbon, can easily be made by automated mass prodn. methods, and the incidence of internal short circuits is greatly reduced. |
