titleOfInvention | PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING ELECTRIC CAPACITORS AND CAPACITORS OBTAINED ACCORDING TO THIS PROCEDURE |
abstract | Coatings for sealing the aluminium casings of electrolytic cells, where the outside and the inner rim of the casing is covered with a layer of epoxy resin applied as powder by electrostatic spraying to 30-50 mym thick, gelled by heating and then coated with a layer 80 mym deep of polyamide-11 prior to curing for 2-5 mins. at 180-220 degrees C. Alternatively a phenolic varnish 5 mym thick may replace the epoxy layer beneath the polyamide coating. Used for mfr. of cells required to resist continuous current discharges at voltages of 3500 V and for use over a wide range of ambient temps. e.g. to -55 degrees C. The coating is more resistant to interfacial penetration by moisture and consequent corrosion of the casing than use of heat shrunk or wrapped thermoplastic sleeving. The epoxy or phenolic coating is a compatible bonding agent for an aluminium/polyamide interface. The polyamide is sufficiently soft and flexible for satisfactory use of clamps or folded lips to retain the lid of the cell in the body mouth. Suitable for cells fitted with lids made of glass reinforced polypropylene and/or involving a seal of ethylene/propylene rubber. |
