titleOfInvention | NITRONAPHTHALEN MANUFACTURING PROCESS |
abstract | Non-catalytic prepn. of nitro-naphthalenes by nitration of naphthalene and/or mono-nitronaphthalenes with HNO3 in an organic solvent is carried out with removal of water formed in reaction by azeotropic distn. Process is esp. useful for prepn. of 1-mono-nitronaphthalene and of dinitronaphthalenes, esp. 1,5- and 1,8-dinitronaphthalenes. Mono- and dinitronaphthalenes are useful intermediates, e.g. for naphthylamines used in synthesis of dyes. The process allows naphthalene to be nitrated in high yields in presence of a slight excess of HNO3, without catalyst and/or of water-extracting agents; and causes no environmental pollution, by-product being merely dilute HNO3 which can be concd. or re-used. |
