titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR IMPLEMENTING A COUNTERCURRENT SUBSTANCE EXCHANGE PROCESS, AND IN PARTICULAR ION EXCHANGE REACTIONS
abstract An ion exchanger bed divided into separate sections in series by inlet and outlet points is fed with the feed liq. divided into fractions and the combination between the first and second parts of the exchange bed is interrupted when the last fraction of the first reaction group has passed. Similarly subsequent sections of the bed are interrupted as this last fraction passes from one section to the next, until penultimate section. After the first liqs. a second group of liqs. is fed in at the inlet, this second group being divided into two vols., the first portion serving to displace the last fraction of the first feed group from each section, the sections of bed being separated again. The second portion, which has a proportion of ions equal to that of the liq. to be treated, is fed onto the first part of the bed. The two combined parts of the bed are separated again and the resulting liqs. including the product are collected and stored to be used in the next treatment cycle. The proportion of material to be exchanged in the reaction liq. of the second liq. feed is regulated to be in proportion to the liq. for treatment. Sections of the bed subsequent to the first have as the reaction liq. the products of the treated liq. taken from the end of each section. Where the separated beds are contained in a single vessel it is possible to pass some fractions of the liq. right through the combined beds, remove a second set of fractions at the end of the first section of the bed and introduce a third set of fractions at he ened of the first section to be discharged at the end of the bed. The ion exchanger bed is used in counter-current exchange processes esp. ion exchange for e.g. elimination of galvanising metals from effluents, extraction of salts from water, decontamination of radioactive residual waters.
