titleOfInvention | PROCESS FOR PREPARING PRODUCTS IN GELIFIED CELLULOSE TRIACETATE AND PRODUCTS PREPARED BY THIS PROCESS |
abstract | A process for prepg. gelled cellulose triacetate (GCTA) comprises (a) dissolving 4-25 wt.% cellulose triacetate (CTA) (acetyl content >42 wt.%) in 75-96 wt.% non-hydrolysing acidic solvent, e.g. a carboxylic acid pref. formic acid of acidity equal to or greater than meta cresol. (b) forming the polymer soln (viscosity 102-106 centipoises) into the configuration of the prod. (c) bringing the formed prod. into contact with excess of a volatile or non-volatile gelling liq. (GL) at a low temp. until the solvent is substantially replaced by it. The GL is a non-solvent for CTA but miscible with the CTA solvent, e.g. water at temp. below 35 degrees C pref. 0-30 degrees C with solvent formic acid, (d) recovering the gelled prod. which is ultra microporous having distinct interpenetrating polymer and liq. phases, in fibre or film form. The liq. phase can be evapd. off, or remain or be replaced with other liqs. |
