titleOfInvention Activated aluminium metal as polymerisation catalyst - has high activity, avoids the need of an inert atmos., and gives fireproof resins
abstract In prodn. of resins, (1) very pure Al is impregnated, in presence of H+, with a metal with an atomic vol. close to that of H, and (2) a resin-forming substance is brought into contact with the reactive Al. The economical process gives a wide range of prods. some of which are novel including (coatings) fireproof and water clear resins. The treated Al has high catalytic activity, and avoids the dangers of the Ziegler catalysts. Inert atmos are not necessary, and avoidance of water is not essential. The viscosity of the resin can be controlled. Polyesters can be obtd. in a 1-stage reaction and polyethylene can be prepd. at room temp. The resins may be alkyds, aldehyde resins, phenolics, polyamides, aminoplasts, allyl resins, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyurethanes, styre (co)polymers, polyethylene, acrylics and cross-linked resins.
