abstract Substd. benzofuran, benzothiophene and naphthofuran fluorescent brighteners of formula (I): (where Q is a monovalent heterocyclic gp. of formula (A) or (B); X is -O- or -S-; Y is - OR or -NR degree Y degree; R is 4-7 C di-lower-alkylamino-lower alkyl, Ph, benzyl or phenylethyl opt. substd. in benzene ring by 1-6 C alkyl, or alkoxy or halogen; R degree is H, 1-3 C alkyl, 4-7 C di-alkylamino-alkyl, opt. 1-6 C alkyl- or alkoxy- or halogen-substd. Ph, benzyl or phenylethyl; Y degree is H or 1-3 C alkyl; R degree and Y degree together with N, to which they are attached, can form a pyrrolidine, piperidine or morpholine gp.; R1 and R2 each is H, 1-6 C alkyl, 1-6 C alkoxy or halogen; R3 and R4 each is H, 1-6 C alkyl, 1-6 C alkoxy, CN, halogen, di-1-6 C-alkylamino, 1-6 C alkanoylamino, Ph opt. substd. by 1-6 C alkyl, halogen, 1-6 C alkoxy or 1-6 C alkanoylamino; and Z is naphtho) are used for treating filaments, fibres, textile fabrics, castings and mouldings; and in mfr. of textiles, paper, lacquers, printing inks, coatings and plastics. (I) fluoresce in blue-white shades under U.V. light, are fast to light, resist soaps, detergents, Cl bleaches and high temps, and can accumulate in prod. without causing an undesirable red or blue discolouration.
