titleOfInvention Spray drying methylolurea cpds with addn of triazone cpd - to reduce splitting off of formaldehyde during drying
abstract Powdered methylolurea cpds. are made by (a) reacting 1 mole urea with 1.6-2.1 moles formaldehyde at pH 6.8-8.0 and temps. of 0-45 degrees C, (b) storing for a short period, and (c) spray-drying, (d) adding before the spraying stage a small amt. of a triazone cpd. of formula (I): in which R = (m)ethyl, propyl, butyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl, hydroxybutyl or a cpd. of formula (II): n = 0.4; R1 = H or CH3 and R2 = H, CH3 or OH, such that the gps. CH3 and OH are not present more than twice in the gp. R; or methylol cpds. of (I). Prodts. are storage-stable dry powder matls. which can be dissolved in water for use as textile treatment aids, esp. for crease-proofing and permanent press cellulosic fabrics. Addn. of the triazone cpd. (I) e.g., before the methylolation stage, gives considerable redn. (e.g., up to 60% less) in splitting off of HCHO from the methylolurea cpds. during spray-drying.
