titleOfInvention | Process of nitriding iron and iron alloys in gaseous media yielding nitrogen. |
abstract | Nitriding of esp. non- or low-alloyed steels, esp. constructional steels, e.g. carburising and heat-treatable steels, in an NH3 gas stream is carried out in 2 temp. steps. The first is effected above the alpha-gamma-transformation in Fe-N2 system, pref. at 650 degrees C, for 2-8 hrs. The second takes place, pref. after slow cooling, below the alpha-gamma-transformation, pref. at 570 degrees C for 2-4 hrs., pref. with addn. of a C-yielding material, esp. MeNH2, in 5-20 vol.% concn. w.r.t. NH3 amt. fed. Residual NH3 content of furnace atmos. is >10% in first- and 45-60% in second temp. step. Fatigue strength of non-alloyed steels may be raised by accelerating cooling rate from 2nd step, by raised gas flow, esp. with N2. |
