abstract Cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 is H, opt. substd. phenyl, benzyl or benzhydryl, 1-10C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, (3-6C cycloalkyl)-(1-6C alkyl), 2-10C haloalkyl, 1-3C cyanoalkyl, (1-3C alkyl)-Y-(2-6C alkyl) in which Y is O or S, 2-10C alkenyl, 3-10C haloalkenyl, (1-6C alkoxycarbonyl)-(2-10C alkenyl), carboxyl-(1-6C alkyl, (1-6C alkoxycarbonyl)-(1-6C alkyl), (1-6C alkylcarbonyl)-(1-6C alkyl), formyl-(1-6C alkyl), opt. acetalised phenylcarbonyl-(1-6C alkyl) in which the phenyl ring may be substd., 2'-thienyl-(1-3C alkyl), 2'-tetrahydrofuryl-1-3C alkyl) or 2'-furyl-(1-3c alkyl); and R2 and R3 are both halogen or R3 is H and R2 is (a) halogen, N3, NH2, a gp. NR5R6 in which R5+R6 is a divalent acyl gp. or an organic ylidene residue, or R5 is H and R6 is an amino-protecting gp. or acyl, or R5 and R6 are both -CO-R7 in which R7 is 1-8C alkyl or alkenyl (opt. substd.), phenyl or a heterocyclic residue, (b) OH or -OCO-R8 in which R8 is opt. substd. alkyl or aryl, or (c) -OSO2R8, acylthio, cyano, cyanato, thiocyanato or arylsulphonyl), are prepd. by reacting a cpd. of formula (II): (where R4 is opt. substd. benzhydryl, alpha-alkyl-benzhydryl or trityl) with mercury cpds. of formula: X1-HgII-X2 or HgI-(X3)2 (where X1 and X2 are indentical electronegative radicals or X1+X2 is O, or X1 is an electronegative radial and X2 is an org. residue, or X1 and X2 are both org. residues; and X is an electronegative residue), and cleaving the resulting compound of formula (IVa) or (IVb) with H2S or H2S-releasing cpds. to give (I) R2- - H-S-Hg-S- H- -R2 X2-Hg-S- H- -R2.
