titleOfInvention Pure crystalline ethers - from phenol and alkyl polyols using azeotropic distn
abstract Crystalline ethers are prepared from phenols of the formula: (where R is (1-4C) alkyl or alkoxy, halogen, or phenyl, Y is O or S, m = 0 to 5, n = 1 to 3 and m + n 6) and an alkyl polyol. A water soln. of the phenol and a basic alkali cpd. with a mixt. of a monocyclical 6-10C benzolic solvent having a 4-8C alkanol is dehydrated by azeotropic distilln. The benzolic solvent; alkanol ratio is 10:90 to 90:10. The resulting alkali phenolate is converted with a halogen hydrin at the reflux temp. to the ether. Pref. the benzolic solvent is a hydrocarbon e.g. Toluol and the alkanol is n butanol. The halogen hydrin is pref. alpha monochlorhydrin and/or a monobromohydrin and the phenol is Suaiacol.
