titleOfInvention Steroid 21-alcohols prepn - by acidolysis of 21-nitrates with hf
abstract Steroid 21-alcohols of formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are H or R1+R2 is a double bond; R3 is H or alpha- or beta-OH; R4 is H or alpha-halo; R5 is H or free or esterified alpha-OH; and R6 is H, free or esterified alpha-OH, or alpha- or beta-methyl; or R3+R4 is a double bond; or R5+R6 is isopropylidenedioxy) are prepd. by reacting steroid 21-nitrates of formula (II): (in which R3+R4 can also be an epoxy gp.) with a 3- to 20-fold molar excess of anhydrous HF at 20 degrees C in a halohydrocarbon (pref. CHCl3). Bases and Lewis bases and Lewis bases are not required; the products can readily be isolated after neutralisation of excess HF, and (I; R4 = alpha-fluoro) can be obtd. in a single step from (II; R3+R4 = epoxy).
