titleOfInvention Antithrombogenic surfaces
abstract The surfaces of a variety of metallic and non-metallic substances (partic. marterial used in prosthetic devices and in blood transporting equipment) may be rendered antithrombogenic by the following simple inexpensive treatment: The substance to be coated is placed in a vacuum system with a synthetic organic antithrombogenic cpd. (I). is such that when it is heated and vaporised in vacuo the vapour pressure rises to 10 torr. The vapour is then irradiated with UV light of lambda 1800 - 4000 angstroms, and (I) is surface photopolymerised onto the substrate giving it a good quality, adherent, continuous antithrombogenic coating. (I) is pref. vinyl substd. and may be an anticoagulant drug (partic. bishydroxycoumarin, ethyl biscoumacetate, 3-(alpha-acetonylbenzyl)-4-hydroxycoumarine, 2-phenylindane-1,3-dione, 2- p-(phenylsulphonyl)phenyl -1,3-indanedione , or 2-diphenylacetyl-1,3-indanedione) or a fibrinolytic agent (partic, E-amino-caproic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, salicylic acid, aspirin, phenylbutazone, urethane, dextran, chlorpeniramine or dipyridamole).
