abstract Compsns contain one or more anionogenic-, non-ionogenic-, zwitter-ionogenic- or ampholytic capillary active cpds and ethane-1,1,2,2-tetracarboxylic acid (I) and/or n-butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid (II) or their water-soluble salts as 'builders', with a ratio builder/capillary-active cpd of 1:20 to 100:1 pref 1:3 to 10:1. (I) is prepd by reacting a sodium deriv of dimethylmalonate with Br2 in methanol and refluxing the tetramethyl-ethane-1,1,2,2-tetracarboxylate formed with NaOH. (II) is prepd by reacting butadiene and maleic acid anhydride to form cis-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid anhydride which is oxidised with HNO3. The Na- or K-salts of (I) and/or (II) are preferred. Pref capillary-active cpd is e.g. 3-hydroxy-4-decoxybutyl-methylsulphoxide. The compsns have high wash-activity for cotton and synthetic materials.
