titleOfInvention Removing 1-substd-2-methyl-1-propenyl radicals from azetidin - -2-ones to give inters for bicyclic antibacterials
abstract Process for eliminating a radical of formula -CR=CMe2 (R = acyl or a carboxylic acid radical opt. in the form of an amide, ester or thioester), from an azetidin-2-one carrying the radical on the ring N atom, and replacing it with H, comprises reacting the azetidinone with a reagent capable of oxidising addition to the double bond of the radical (pref. OsO4 or KMnO4). The products are useful in the synthesis of bicyclic cpds. (cf DT-1935970) esp. penam, cepham and cephems, having antibacterial or other pharmacological activity.
