titleOfInvention Quaternary pyridinium salts - decomposing with heat, used in water repellent treatments for fabrics
abstract Quaternary pyridinium salts of formula: in which R' is a satd. or unsatd. aliphatic residue of 10-22C; R2 is H or -CH3; X is -O-, -S-, ; n is 0.-3, when R' is satd. alkyl it is 1,2 or 3; and when X is -O-CO- it is O; Y is a monovalent radical of a strong acid, pref. Cl. The cpds. in which X is (C(=O)O- or -O- may be made by reacting cpds. of formula: R'OH R'COOH with n equivs. of propylene oxide or, pref. ethylene oxide, and treating the product with HCHO and an acid chloride, and then reacting the product with a pyridine deriv. The pyridinium salts are used as emulsifying agents, which decompose with heat, esp. for making water-repellent treatments for textiles.
