abstract | Biocidal coating mixtures contain poly-mercury aromatic cpds. of general formula: R-(HgX)n as active biocides where R = an aromatic residue, and X = an anion, and n >1. Examples of R are phenyl (specifically claimed), naphthyl, anthryl, heterocyclic cpds. e.g. pyridine which may carry substituents e.g. Cl, alkyl, HO, NH2 etc. Suitable anions X are acetate (specifically claimed, propionate, lactate, oleate, borate , carbonate, sulphate, succinate etc. These biocidal cpds. are more active than the usual mono mercurated derivs. in which they were formerly regarded as undesirable impurities. In addn to showing higher biocidal activity these poly-Hg cpds. show a greater resistance to weathering and efflorescence and much less development of darkening and of sulphide flecks on exposure to H2S. |
