titleOfInvention Mevalolactone and its homologues - prepd from 4-hydroxy-2-butanone and an acid
abstract Mevalolactone (I) and other lactones with the same nuclear skeleton are prepd. by reaction of 4-hydroxy-2-butanone (II) or a higher homologue, with an aliphatic acid of >=2C atoms, an aryl aliphatic acid or a cycloaliphatic acid, in the presence of Li, Na or K and an aromatic solvent having >=2 rings. The mevalonic acid produced is converted into (I) by dilute acid. (I) is a precursor in the biosynthesis of steroids.
