abstract | Stable free radicals of formula: (where all 'R' gps. except R3 and R31 are each H or an organic radical; R3 and R31 are each H, OH, NH2, NOH, NNH2, COOH, COOR or CONH2) are useful as pharmaceutical intermediates, as spin markers for macromolecules in biological research, as reaction initiators, free-radical capturers, polymerisation inhibitors, antioxidants, etc. They are prepd. by a Schopf-Robinson reaction between hexan-2, 5-dione, acetone-1,3-dicarboxylic acid and NH4Cl; this gives the tropinone, which is treated with H2O2 to give the radical. |
