abstract | Olefins are (Co) dimerised by contacting the olefin in an inert solvent with a catalyst system comprising a nickel-based complex formed from a cation in which the nickel is combined with 6 molecules of an organic sulphoxide, and an anion composed of a halide complex of a group VIII metal, the complex being used together with an organo-aluminium cpd. The organic sulphoxide is pref. dimethyl sulphoxide, tetramethylene sulphoxide or diphenyl sulphoxide. The process is esp. useful for the dimerisation of propylene to a product with a high content of methylpentenes. |
