abstract Interstitial alkali metal-graphite cpds. are formed by agitating graphite in a soln. of an alkali metal-aromatic hydrocarbon complex in a polar solvent such as THF. The compsn. obtd. is exfoliated by treatment with acetaldehyde at -60 degrees C. The polyacetaldehyde formed as a by-product is removed by solvent extraction or by heating at 100 degrees C. The product is used as a polymerisation catalyst of vinyl, diene and aldehyde monomers, esp. of acetaldehyde.
