abstract A flexible catheter of PTFE, fluoridated ethylene propylene or polyethylene enterophthalate with a smooth external surface and of a pre-determined length is slid over a hollow needle with a diameter equal to the internal diameter of the catheter. The catheter hub and needle collar interlock and a syringe can be attached to the needle. The external catheter provides a relatively easy way to transversely guide the needle into the epidural space.
