abstract The invention relates to novel omega-hydroxyketene acetals of the structural formula (I) <IMAGE> where R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, and R2 is an alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, with it being optionally possible for R1 and R2, provided R1 is not hydrogen, to be linked to each other by an alkylene bridge containing 2-4 carbon atoms, and where R3 is an alkylene group containing 3-10 carbon atoms, with it being possible for the just mentioned alkylene group to be a straight chain, a cyclic structure or a straight chain which contains a cyclic structure. The invention furthermore relates to a process for preparing degradable polyorthoesters starting from compounds of the formula (I). <IMAGE>
