abstract The present invention relates to novel tri- or tetra substituted allylazetidinone compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, a alkoxy or a R4B group, wherein R4 and B are as defined in patent claims, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl, R3 is hydrogen, alkyl, halogen alkyl, alkoxy methyl, aliphatic acyloxymethyl, 1-alkoxylcarbonyl oxyethyl, aralkyl, benzhydryl, phtalidyl, silyl, an allylic group, Q is a leaving group, X is fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodine, hydrogen and Y is a group with electron affinity. The compounds are useful for the preparation of 2-substituted alkyl-3-carboxy carbonemens which are useful as antibiotics and as β-lactamase-inhibitors by a novel Michael addition-elimination reaction.
