abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-aryl-tetrahydro(pyrido- and pyrrolo)(e)[1,2,4]- triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidones useful as benzodiazepine receptor agonists/antagonists of the formula Ia <IMAGE> for the preparation of tautomers and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, in said formula A is -CH2-CH2- or >CH-CH3 and R is C1-C4 alkyl, benzyl, 2-phenetyl, anilinocarbonyl, ethoxycarbonyl or phenylacetyl and R1 is phenyl, halogen phenyl, furyl, pyridyl or pyrrolyl.
