abstract Method comprises (a) treating non-activated silica particles with a soln. of a Sn tetra-halide in an inert hydrocarbon at a wt. ratio of 1:1-1:20 at -30-+30 deg. C to at least partially block the OH gps. on the silica; (b) impregnating this treated silica with a soln. of a Mg dialkyl or alkyl halide in an inert hydrocarbon at a wt. ratio fo 1:0.1-1:10 at between 20 deg. C and the b.pt. of the liq. phase for a time sufficient for the Mg cpd. to react with the Sn cpd.; (c) halogenating the support by treating the impregnated silica with a soln. of a Sn, Sb or Si halide at a molar ratio metal halide:Mg cpd. in (b) of 0.1:1-100:1 at -20-+100 deg. C for 0.5-5.0 h; (d) contacting the halogenated support with an excess of a Ti tetrahalide at 20-120 deg. C for 0.5-5.0 h to titanate the support; (e) contacting the titanated support with a Lewis base in a molar ratio of base:Mg cpd. in (b) of 0.05:1-0.5:1 at 80-120 deg. C for 0.5-5.0 h to obtain the solid support system; and (f) recovering this solid from the reaction prods. of step (e).
