abstract SELECTIVE MICROBIOLOGICAL DEGRADATION METHOD OF THE LATERAL CHAIN IN C-17 STEROIDS. IT CONSISTS OF THE AEROBIC INCUBATION OF A STEROID CONTAINING AT LEAST 8 CARBON ATOMS IN THE SIDE CHAIN AT POSITION 17, WITH MV-COBACTERIUM SP: NRRL B-3683 OR WITH ENZYMES DERIVED FROM THE SAME. THE INCUBATION IS CARRIED OUT IN A NUTRIENT ENVIRONMENT CONTAINING A SIMILAR SOURCE OF CARBON AND A SOURCE OF NITROGEN, AS WELL AS INORGANIC SALTS THAT PROVIDE PHOSPHATE IONS, MAGNESIUM IONS AND IRON IONS, AT A 23 FERMENTATION AND FERMENTING TEMPERATURE , DURING 2 HOURS TO 15 DAYS. THESE COMPOUNDS HAVE APPLICATIONS AS SYNTHESIS INTERMEDIATES FOR OBTAINING STEROID HORMONES.
