IT CONSISTS OF REACTING A MOLAR EQUIVALENT OF FORMULA (II) RIFAMYCIN B WITH 1 TO 9 MOLAR EQUIVALENTS OF A 2-AMINOPYRIDINE OF FORMULA (III) AND 1 TO 4 MOLAR EQUIVALENTS OF AN OXIDIZING AGENT, TO OBTAIN PIRIDO-IMIDAZO-IMIDAZO RIFAMICINS OF FORMULA (I) WHERE R IS HO ACETYL; R1 AND R2 ARE INDEPENDENTLY H, C 1 TO 4 ALKYL, BENZYLOXYL, MONO- OR DI- (C 1 TO 3) -ALKYLAMINE (C 1 TO 4) -ALKYL AND OTHERS. THE REACTION IS CARRIED OUT IN A SOLVENT, AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN AMBIENT AND THAT OF THE REACTIONAL MIXTURE AND DURING A PERIOD OF TIME BETWEEN 10 AND 100 HOURS. THEY ARE USED TO COMBAT MICROBIAL INFECTIONS OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT.
