IT CONSISTS OF SULFONATE 4-NITROTOLUENE WITH SULFURIC ACID AT 50-85% CONTINUOUSLY, MAINTAINING A DEGREE OF CONVERSION OF 4-NITROTOLUENE 90%; DURING THE REACTION, KEEP THE TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 80 AND 140JC. THE RATIO IS FIXED FROM 1.0 TO 1.5 MOLS OF SO3 PER MOL OF 4-NITROTOLUENE. THE REACTION IS EFFECTED IN CIRCULATION AGITATOR BOILERS OR LOOP REACTORS. THE DESIRED PRODUCT IS ISOLATED FROM THE MASS OF REACTION BY CRYSTALIZATION IN WATER ADJUSTING THE CONCENTRATION OF H2SO4 TO 60-75% AND THE CONCENTRATION OF 4-NITROTOLUEN-2-SULPHONIC ACID TO 30-40%. IT IS USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF 44-DINITROSTILVEN-22-DYSULPHONIC ACID WHICH IN TURN IS USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS.
