FOR THE MANUFACTURING OF THE PROBE (1) IT STARTS FROM A FORGED TITANIUM BAR AND A BODY (3) IS MADE THAT HAS TWO OPPOSITE ENDS (5, 7), EACH ONE FINISHED IN A FLAT SURFACE (9); THE PROBE HAS AN OPERATING TIP AT ONE END (5) WHICH MUST BE RELATIVELY SHORT AND MAY INCLUDE A REFLECTIVE SURFACE (23), DEFINING A CAVITY (27) WHICH WILL BE FILLED WITH MOLTEN METAL. COOLING MEANS ARE PROVIDED IN THE BODY (3) SUCH AS A JACKET (31) OF SUFFICIENT CAPACITY TO COOL THE PROBE WHEN THE OPERATING TIP, SUBMERGED IN AN ALUMINUM CASTING, REACHES ITS THERMAL EQUILIBRIUM BETWEEN 675<025>C AND 825<025> c. THE OPERATING TIP IS MADE BY CLEANING ITS SURFACE WITH ACID SOLUTION TO REMOVE TITANIUM OXIDES; THEN IT IS MAINTAINED IN A VACUUM ATMOSPHERE AT A PRESSURE BETWEEN 50 AND 300 MICRONS FOR BETWEEN 15 AND 60 MINUTES, FINISHING ITS CLEANING WITH A BOMBARDMENT OF IONIZED GAS FROM A COLD CATHODE DISCHARGE; THEN THE PRESSURE OF THE VACUUM ATMOSPHERE WAS REDUCED TO A VALUE BETWEEN 0.05 AND 0.5 MICRONS AND IT VOLATILIZED IN THE SAME ALUMINUM FOR A TIME BETWEEN 15 AND 30 SECONDS SO THAT IT IS DEPOSITED ON THE SURFACE OF THE TIP. THE POINT SO MADE IS SEALED BY SUBMERGING IT IN AN ALUMINUM CASTING. A PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCER DEVICE (13) IS CONNECTED TO THE PROBE, WHICH EMITS AND RECEIVES THE ULTRASONIC WAVES TOWARDS AND FROM THE ALUMINUM CAST, THE PROBE BEING THE CARRIER OF THE SAME. |
