abstract | PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING PURIFIED STRONTIUM NITRATE FROM STRONTIUM SULPHATE, WHICH HAS APPLICATIONS TO PRODUCE RED FIRE IN RAILROAD FLARES, EMERGENCY GLAZES, SIGNAL ROCKETS AND FIREWORKS. IT CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING STAGES: A SUSPENSION OF STRONTIUM SULPHATE AND ALKALINE METAL CARBONATE IS HEATED; THE PRECIPITATE OF STRONTIUM SULPHATE FORMED IS SEPARATED AND WASHED WITH WATER. AN AQUEOUS SUSPENSION OF STRONTIUM IS FORMED AND DISSOLVES BY ADDITION OF NITRIC ACID. THE SOLUTION IS TREATED WITH AN ALKALINE METAL HYDROXIDE TO PRECIPITATE THE HEAVY METALS AND MAGNESIUM AND THE PRECIPITATE IS SEPARATED. STRONTIUM NITRATE IS CRYSTALIZED FROM DISSOLUTION AND WASHED. THE MOTHER AND WASHING WATERS CAN BE RECYCLED TO THE STRONTIUM NITRATE SOLUTION, AFTER ITS CONCENTRATION. 3 |
