PROCEDURE FOR THE DIRECT PREPARATION OF BETAMETHYLTIOPROPIONIC ALDEHYDE BY REACTION OF METHYLMERCAPTAN AND A GASEOUS MIXTURE CONTAINING ACROLEIN, RESULTING FROM THE CATALYTIC OXIDATION OF PROPYLENE BY AIR, IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER. THIS PROCEDURE IS CARRIED OUT IN THREE STAGES: IN THE FIRST STAGE, THE ACRYLIC ACID CONTAINED IN THE GROSS GASEOUS CURRENT IS REMOVED FROM THE CATALYTIC OXIDATION REACTION OF PROPYLENE WITH ABSORPTION OF THE GASEOUS CURRENT IN WATER OR IN A SOLVENT. IN THE SECOND STAGE, THE WATER CARRIED BY THE GASEOUS FLOW BY CONDENSATION IS ELIMINATED. IN THE THIRD AND LAST STAGE, THE GASEOUS MIXTURE IS REACTED WITH METHYLMERCAPTAN, WITH WHICH THE BETAMETHYLTHIOPROPIONIC ALDEHYDE IS FORMED.
