titleOfInvention A METHOD TO PREPARE A NON-GELIFIED POLYESTER.
abstract A method for preparing an ungelled polyester that is suitable for use as a resinous binder in coating compositions, said polyester being formed by reacting at a temperature of up to 250 ° C: (A) 10 to 70% by weight of a bifunctional active hydrogen component that has two active hydrogens per molecule, selected from the class consisting of hydroxyl, primary amine, and secondary amine groups, said active hydrogen component comprising: (1) 10 to 60% by weight of an acyclic diol having a carbon-to-carbon ratio oxygen of at least 2, (2) up to 60% by weight of a cyclic diol, (3) up to 20% by weight of a compound selected from the class consisting of hydroxyl-containing diamines and amines with, (B) 25 a 85% by weight of a dicarboxylic acid component comprising: (1) 5 to 85% by weight of an acyclic dicarboxylic acid containing 2 to 36 carbon atoms, (2) up to 80% by weight of a cyclic dicarboxylic acid ; (C) up to 30% by weight of an active hydrogen component having at least 3 active hydrogens per molecule, the active hydrogens being selected from the class consisting of hydroxyl, primary amine, secondary amine, and carboxylic acids, and (D) up to 20% by weight of a monoamino-monocarboxylic acid; the weight percentages being based on the total weight of (A), (B), (C) and (D); adjusting the percentages of the reactants in such a way that the percentages by weight of the cyclic residues in said polyester plus the percentages by weight of the amide residues formed in said polyester multiplied by four gives a value of a maximum of 35 and the percentages in weights of the reactants are further adjusted such that these reactants contain from about 0.01 to 1.0 gram mole of reactants, having a functionality of 3 or more per 500 grams of reactants; the polyesterification reaction being carried out initially at a relatively fast rate up to a short gelation point; the reaction rate being then decreased and the polyesterification reaction being carried out at a lower rate until a polyester with a molecular weight within the range of 20,000 to 300,000 is obtained as determined. by gel permeation chromatography, using a standard polystyrene, and a hydroxyl number of 10 to 160.
