Process for the preparation of aromatic carbonic acid esters, characterized by reacting under essentially anhydrous conditions and optionally in the presence of a solvent, a phenylaminomethylphenyl (alkoxycarbonyl) compound having the formula: ** (See formula )** and the homologues of these compounds, where X, Y, Z, X'', Y'' and Z'' are independently hydrogen atoms, an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a group -NHCOOR, -CH2ArNHCOOR or - N(COOR)CH2Ar, R is an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms and Ar is phenyl which can be substituted with an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, at a temperature of about 50°C to 170°C and in the presence of a effective amount of an acid catalyst to convert (alkoxycarbonyl)phenylaminomethylphenyl compound to the aromatic carbonic acid esters and recover the desired carbomates |
