abstract A method of preparing a blood control standard for quality control of the measurement of pH and blood gases, characterized in that it consists of thoroughly washing the erythrocytes in saline solution, gently mixing them with an aldehyde solution and saline solution, wash them thoroughly in aldehyde solution and saline solution, wash them thoroughly in saline solution, buffer them at a pH of 7 to 7.7 approximately, mix them with bicarbonate ion until a pCO2 between approximately 20 and 55 mm Hg, transfer them to receptacles leaving a gaseous upper space with a volume at least approximately equal to the volume of said erythrocytes, flood the gaseous space with a gas made up of approximately 0 to 15% CO2, 0 to 25% O2 and the rest selected from the group formed by N2 and inert gases and mixtures thereof, and immediately after sealing said receptacles to form a gas-tight seal.
