abstract Method of inhibiting the reaction of glass with alkalis, in a cement composition containing alkali-susceptible glass reinforcement and an alkaline inorganic cement binder, characterized by incorporating into the alkaline inorganic binder and the glass reinforcement a purifying material reactive with alkalis and finely divided containing silica as its main constituent, said purifying material having a reactivity with the alkali content of the cementitious binder substantially greater than the reactivity of the glass reinforcement with it, whereby the alkali content of the binder reacts with the purifying material in preference to glass reinforcement, and in that the alkali-reactive purifying material is provided in an amount, based on its silica content, that is at least in stoichiometric proportion to the alkali content of the binder.
