abstract Process for obtaining a copolyester composition suitable for the production of shaped bodies, in particular fibers, having high thermal stability and high resistance to flame propagation, characterized by the polycondensation, in the presence of a conventional catalyst, of the following components: A) an aryl dicarboxylic acid or its diester; B) a saturated aliphatic dialcohol; C) the product (alpha) of the reaction of 1 mole of a diester of an alkaline dicarboxyaryl-sulfonate (1) with 1-2 moles of at least one tetrabrominated dialcohol having the general formula (2): **(Formula) ** where a and b represent, independently of each other, an integer from 1 to 3 inclusive, said reaction being carried out in the presence of a transesterification catalyst selected from the group consisting of Zn, Co, Ca, Sn, Ti and Mn compounds, being Ti and Mn compounds are preferred; and D) up to 1% by weight of a phosphorus derivative (trivalent or petavalent).
