abstract | A process for the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment, comprising the operations of (1) preparing titanium dioxide by the sulfate process or by the vapor phase oxidation of titanium tetrachloride, (2) taking the titanium dioxide thus obtained in the form of the calciner discharge or the reactor discharge and dispersing the titanium dioxide in water in the presence of a dispersant that is 0.1% or 0.3% by weight of monoisopropanolamine, a water-soluble phosphate in an amount of 0.05% by weight, expressed as P2O5, or a mixture thereof, or a water soluble silicate in an amount of 0.1% to 0.5% by weight, expressed as SiO2, or a mixture thereof, (3) add to the aqueous dispersion thus formed a water-soluble phosphate in an amount of 0.05% to 1% by weight, expressed as P2O5, when the dispersing agent is not only a phosphate, (4 ) add to the dispersion a hydrolyzable and water-soluble zirconium acid compound in an amount of 0.2% at 2.5% by weight, expressed as ZrO2, a water soluble hydrolyzable aluminum acid compound in an amount of 0.2% to 2.5% by weight, expressed as Al2O3, a water soluble silicon compound in an amount of 0% to 1% by weight, expressed as SiO2, and a water soluble hydrolyzable alkaline aluminum compound in an amount of 0.5% to 2.5% by weight, expressed as Al2O3, (5) adjust the pH of the dispersion, if necessary, to a value of 5.6 to 8.5, and (6) recovering the treated pigment from the dispersion, all percentages by weight being based on the weight of titanium dioxide in the aqueous dispersion. |
