abstract | Reaction of the following compound with an oxidising agent results in preparation of the corresponding demethylated compounds < IMAGE > in which either both R1 and R2 are methyl groups or one of the two radicals is a methyl group and the other is a hydrogen atom. When both R1 and R2 are methyl groups, the methyl group in the 3''-N position or both methyl groups are eliminated, but when one of R1 and R2 is a methyl group and the other hydrogen, the methyl group is eliminated. The resulting compounds are valuable antibiotics. |
